SESSION 1: September 13 - October 21, 2011
Watercolor I
Learn essential techniques used in traditional English botanical watercolor painting. Brushes, papers and paints will be explained. Students will chose a painting by P. J. Redoute to transfer and paint a copy of. Learn how to properly load a brush with color for flat washes, graded washes and dry brush. The history of botanical art will be discussed. No experience necessary.

Drawing I
Learn fundamental skills for botanical drawing. This class covers the basics of drawing skills for the absolute beginner. Skills that will be developed include where and how to start, learning to observe, how to shade and how to use your pencils. This class will get you past staring at that blank paper and start drawing.

Autumn Leaves 3-Day Saturday Intensive
Autumn leaves in deep golds, fiery reds, and brilliant oranges will be the subjects for this class. This watercolor class will focus on texture and color.

SESSION 2: October 31 - December 15, 2011
Watercolor II
Put into practice the principals you learned in Watercolor I. Working with simple plant subjects, students will be shown step-by-step demonstrations in making a contour drawing and then a realistic watercolor painting. This class will focus on expression of form, structure, and color. Additional emphasis will be placed on flat wash, graded wash, glazing, wet-in-wet and dry brush watercolor techniques.

Drawing II
Learn to accurately draw botanical forms. Using pencil as the primary medium, emphasis will be laced on drawing to scale, creating texture and surface details. You will create a final drawing project suitable for your portfolio.

Holiday Botanicals for Card Making
Create small botanical paintings that can be reproduced and used for your holiday cards. Choose a subject that fits your skill level including winter fruits, berries, pine needles and cones, or a Christmas cactus. Learn about composition through card design.

Introduction to Drawing - Form - Silverwood
Light on form creates dimension in your paintings and drawings. Using sepia tones, students will complete a series of exercises that will help to realistically render botanical paintings. No experience necessary.

Pen and Ink I
Pen and ink is an important traditional medium used in scientific illustration. Students will learn about materials and techniques including line and stipple and creating form. A series of exercises will help students transition from graphite to pen and ink.

Shading - Dark, Light and In Between
Bring your drawings to life with sophisticated modeling. Experiment with and/or learn the techniques of shading. Play with lighting and reflected light. Delve into the complexities of cast shadow. Fearlessly add perfect spots of light or dark. Learn shading as a beginner, push your work to the next level as an intermediate, or make your work excel as an advanced student. It’s the one room schoolhouse of shading.

The Artichoke in Watercolor - Silverwood
Learn how to create beautiful, luminous watercolor paintings of winter fruits and vegetables. Color mixing, layering color washes, and working from light to dark to create optimum form will be covered. No experience necessary.

Small Paintings On Calfskin Vellum
3-Day Saturday Intensive
If you have been intimidated about working on calfskin vellum but have wanted to try, this is the class for you. Using watercolor, we will complete several small paintings using dry brush as the primary technique. Paintings will be no larger than 5” x 6” and subjects will include small fruit, leaves and simple flowers. Vellum will be available for purchase in class with prices ranging from $3 to $6 each.

Minnesota Mushrooms
Fall is the prime season for the ephemeral Minnesota mushrooms. Learn about the physical characteristics that must be incorporated to complete scientifically accurate illustrations. Graphite drawings will be made before completing the illustration in watercolor.

Introduction to Botanical Watercolor- Silverwood
You’ve heard that watercolor is a difficult medium to master. In this class, we will prove this to be wrong. This class is for the beginner or for the person who has been frustrated with watercolor. You will learn about the materials, how to load the brush and mix colors with a limited palette, and practice exercises that will have you painting like a pro!

Pen and Ink II - New to Science Ficus
Students will create an illustration of a new-to-science ficus collected in Papua New Guinea by Dr. George Weiblen of the University of Minnesota. Working from herbarium specimens, students will create pen and ink illustrations on acetate. Students will learn the process used by professional scientific illustrators, from copying herbarium sheets to composing a plate with several of the plants parts. This class will expand how you look at composition, whether you primarily work in watercolor or for scientific publications.

Texture
Sharpen your drawing skills by exploring textures- from smooth to bumpy to fuzzy and beyond. Using graphite pencils, you will work on developing techniques for realistically rendering a variety of botanical surfaces.

Lichens & Mosses
Lichens and mosses are abundant in most woodland areas however are often overlooked as botanical art subjects. Their variety of colors and interesting shapes offer the artist the opportunity to look closely and capture their intricate beauty. Herb Garden - Watercolor
Herbs have been used for both culinary and medicinal purposes for centuries. Bring your favorite herb to class and make a watercolor painting suitable for hanging in your kitchen or dining room. This class is geared to your individual level so from the bunch of plants you bring we will choose either a single sprig of one herb or several different herbs to create a painting you will love and be able to complete during the session.

Orchids in Watercolor
Orchids are one of the most fascinating flowers to illustrate. Their grace and subtle beauty offer the artist a challenging yet rewarding experience. First draw and then begin painting your specimen in watercolor. Live orchids will be available for purchase in the first class for approximately $35 each. Kathy Creger is a judge for the American Orchid Society and has traveled extensively throughout the United States, as well as collecting orchids in Equador and Jamaica.

Multiple Media - Cacti and Succulents
Cacti and succulents comprise some of the most fascinating structures of nature. Learn to see and illustrate the elegant patterns these plants develop as they grow. After drawing them from many angles, we’ll add the subtle beauty of color in either watercolor, colored pencils, or colored graphite pencils. Some experience in drawing and watercolor would be helpful

Herbarium Book Making & Botany Class
In the first class you will create a beautiful herbarium book to contain your collection. In the five following classes you will learn about the ethics of plant collecting, how to collect, press and mount specimens. Create your personal herbarium from plants and flowers you collect. Hone your observational skills by learning the use of plant identification keys. A plant identification field trip is included.

Spring Wildflowers
The ephemeral spring flowers are some of the most beautiful and delicate flora in Minnesota. We will explore the wildflowers of the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden through sketches and digital photographs. Then you’ll select a subject to complete a contour drawing and watercolor painting. An I-Pad or laptop computer will be helpful but not required for this class.

Twigs and Branches - Silverwood
Twigs and branches that are just beginning to bud at this time of year and are interesting subjects for a botanical painting. Using what Mother Nature provides, from cherry blossoms to the fat buds of oaks, we’ll learn techniques of composition as well as the morphology of these interesting subjects. Graphite, and watercolor will be used.
