Color Theory - Beginning to Intermediate
Explore color through a series of exercises that will familiarize you with
this complex subject.  The history of color and color wheels, color
terminology, color harmony, colors in nature, clear and neutral colors and
mixing greens, creams and browns will be covered.

Pen and Ink I - Beginning to Advanced
Pen and ink is an important traditional medium used in scientific
illustration.  Students will learn about materials and techniques including
line and stipple and creating form.  A series of exercises will help
students transition from graphite to pen and ink.

Botanical Abstractions - Intermediate
Explore how to create botanical abstractions inspired by the Arts and Crafts
Movement, American Modernism and Contemporary Art.  Then use your designs to
create patterns and repeats.  Includes discussion of current design trends
using floral/nature motifs and options for applying your design and pattern
to books, paper, and fabric.

Seeds & Galls - Beginning to Intermediate
Discover the beauty of these intricate subjects.  With pencil and charcoal,
explore gesture, line, shape, form and shading.  Drawing from plant
specimens, we will focus on accurate botanical representation.

Watercolor II - Intermediate
Building on skills and concepts introduced in Watercolor I, this class will
focus on realistic expression of form, structure, texture and color using
dry brush watercolor techniques.  Students will work from simple plant
subjects including leaves and fruit.

Drawing I - Beginner
This class covers the basics of drawing skills for the absolute beginner.
Students will hone their observation skills, learn how to use pencils and to
shade.

Session V April 14 - May 22, 2008

Pen and Ink II - Tropical Figs - Intermediate
Students will create an illustration of a new-to-science fichus collected in
Papua, New Guinea by Dr. George Weiblen.  Drawing directly from herbarium
sheets, students will compose a plate with several of the plants parts on
film, and then ink the work.

Spring Field Sketching - Beginner to Advanced
Take advantage of the beautiful grounds and gardens at the Bakken.  This
class will meet outside (weather permitting).  Using graphite and charcoal,
students will make field sketches and notes as studies for a finished
drawing to be completed indoors.  Our subjects will include trees and new
spring growth.

Spring Flowers in Watercolor - Beginner to Advanced
Using spring flowering bulbs as specimens, students will explore plant
anatomy as they draw and paint the whole plant from flower to bulb.

Herbarium Book Construction and Plant Preservation - Beginner to
Intermediate

Create your personal bound herbarium from plants and flowers you collect.
In the first class you will bind a herbarium book to contain your
collection.  In five following sessions you will learn about the ethics of
plant collecting, how to collect, press and mount specimens.  Hone your
observational skills by learning the use of plant identification keys.  A
plant identification field trip is included.

Drawing II - Beginner to Intermediate
Learn to accurately draw botanical forms.  Using pencil as the primary
medium, emphasis will be placed on drawing to scale, creating texture and
surface details.  You will crate a final drawing project suitable for your
portfolio.

Session VI June 2 - July 18, 2008

Small Paintings on Vellum - Beginner to Intermediate
If you have been intimidated about working on calfskin vellum but have
wanted to try, this is the class for you.  Using watercolor we will complete
small paintings using dry brush as the primary technique.  Paintings will be
no larger than 5" x 6" and subjects will include small fruit, leaves and
simple flowers.  Vellum will be available for purchase in class with prices
ranging from $4 to $6 each.

Watercolor I - Beginner
Explore the medium of watercolor and learn the techniques used in
traditional English botanical painting.  Students will learn by copying
paintings by P. J. Redoute.  The history of botanical art will be discussed.

Garden Flowers - Intermediate to Advanced
Drawing and painting flowers from your garden will be the subject of this
class.  Students will make contour drawings, focusing on composition,
correct perspective and accuracy.  The Drawings will be transferred to
watercolor paper and painted.

Fruits and Vegetables - Intermediate to Advanced
Learn how to create beautiful, luminous paintings of summer fruits and
vegetables.  Mary Anne's method of layering light washes, working into the
dark shadows of a subject will help you create optimum dimension in your
work.

Drawing Texture - Beginner to Advanced
Sharpen your drawing skills by exploring texture - from smooth to bumpy to
fuzzy and beyond!  Using graphite pencils, you will work on developing
techniques for realistically rendering a variety of botanical surfaces.

Master Class

Katie Lee

Join us for this opportunity to learn botanical painting from master artist,
Katie Lee.  Katie is a respected natural history artist and instructor.  She
teaches drawing watercolor, gouache and illustration courses at many
institutions around the world including at the New York Botanical Garden.
Her work can be found in private collections in England, Australia, The
United States and South Africa.  A number of Katie's works are in the
Contemporary Botanical Artists Collection of Dr. Shirley Sherwood, and in
the collection of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation at Carnegie
Mellon University.  Katie Lee has illustrated a number of books for children
and adults, including A Visit to Galapagos (Harry N. Abrams), Underwater
with Ogden Nash (Bulfinch Press), and the award-winning Puffin's Homecoming,
Orca Song, Loggerhead Turtle, Undersea City, Black Bear Cub, and Monarch of
Aster Way (Smithsonian Wild Heritage Collection.)

MASTER CLASS

Master Class with Mr. Sunitsorn Pimpasalee (Mr. Surin)

Join us for this extraordinary opportunity to learn from one of Thailand's leading botanical artists.  Mr. Surin will be making his inaugural visit to the United States to teach at the Minnesota School of Botanical  Art and the Desert Botanical Garden Art and Illustration School.  Mr. Surin is an extremely gifted artist whose work has been exhibited in many venues including at the National Science Museum in Bangkok and the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden in Chiang Mai, Thailand.  He has a B.A. in Art Education from the Nakhon Rathchasima Rajabhat University with further training from Mr. Vichai Malikul, who now works at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C.  His illustrations have been published in many publications. Mr. Surin's work is gracefully composed and he uses materials available in the United States including Winsor Newton watercolors.   Don't miss out on learning new techniques from an artist who is from across the globe!
