We are pleased to offer Nature Art Classes for Children at the Minnesota School of Botanical Art. All classes are taught by Anna Rosenthal and will be held at the Minnesota School of Botanical Art at Longfellow House in Minnehaha Park. Drawing 1
This course focuses on the basics of drawing. It is important to have a base understanding of using line, shape, form, shading and perspective to build on and use in creating a realistic drawing. In this class we will draw plants and learn to use these basic drawing elements and principles to do so.

Capturing Fall Leaves in Colored Pencil
This course focuses on drawing a variety of leaves in their fall colors. Using colored pencils, we will create detailed drawings capturing the beauty and mixture of tones found in fall leaves. The techniques of blending and creating depth of form will be a focus for drawing realistic renderings of leaves. Learn to to observe plants and capture them on paper.

Introduction to Botanical Watercolor Painting
This course will be an introduction to the history of Botanical Art and traditional methods of creation. Botanical art is a long established tradition with a rich history. We will look at old masters of botanical art for inspiration and then learn the basic steps to create a traditional botanical painting from drawing to watercolor

Pumpkins and Gourds: Colored Pencil
This course will focus on capturing the beautiful color, form and texture of the fall harvest. Through observation we will create a realistic drawing of a pumpkin or gourd and add color with colored pencil. This class will explore the methods of colored pencils to been colors and create a drawing worthy of framing.

In this course we will look at the details and beauty in the fall season. Through observation we will learn to capture the details of mushrooms onto paper and using color to bring them to life. This class will focus on developing drawing techniques and color theory to create a series of drawings.

In this course we will look closely at the variety and intricate beauty found in dried seed pods. We will learn to draw small specimens and create a series of illustrations. Colored Pencil techniques will be taught and applied in our drawings. This class will focus on capturing details found in these unlikely but beautiful subjects.

Youth-Seedpods






Drawing Bird Nests: Graphite
In this course we will use graphite to create detailed drawings of bird nests. There is a variety of bird nest forms and every student will have a chance to draw from a real bird’s nest. This class will strengthen your observation skills as we work to capture all of the detail found in a nest. Through drawing we will learn to create depth and contrast that will make our drawings come to life.

Youth-Bird Nests






Twigs: Colored Pencil
In this course we will use collections of natural treasures and capture them on paper. We will create a series of drawings of various twigs. There is a wide variety within different trees and you can see that in the details of every twig. We will learn to identify different tree species and capture them in our sketchbooks using graphite and colored pencil.

Youth-Twigs






Winter Berries: Colored Pencil
In this course we will learn to draw and illustrate berries. We will draw a branch full of berries and focus on creating a beautiful composition. This class will be a three-day workshop that focuses on drawing and using color to create vibrant botanical illustrations. We will develop skills in shading with colored pencil and using a variety of tones to create berries that appear three-dimensional.

Youth-Berries






Evergreens: Colored Pencil
In this course we will draw an assortment of Evergreen branches. In the middle of Minnesota winter there is not much green. But Evergreen trees still bring some color into this cold month. We will create detailed drawings of various evergreen branches learning how to illustrate pine needles. This class will focus on color, form and texture using colored pencils.

In this course we will create drawings of pinecones. This complex subjects a fun challenge to draw. We will illustrate pinecones focusing on every detail. With a variety of drawing techniques, we will start with a line drawing and then add shading and form. Through this class each student will create a drawing and learn about the different species of pine trees an how their pinecones differ.
